states. dr. sheryl burgess joins us to explain. hair dressers? tell us how they can help. >> well, there's an initiative to get more people involved in diagnosing or at least letting the person know that there is something going on. particularly in the scalp. and a lot of people go to hair stylists and barbers and they're the ones that see our scalp. we don't tend to see our scalp. so for the most part, being able to let us know when they see something new, something that appears new on the scalp or something that may bleed with combing or styling the hair, to alert the customer to go see the dermatologist. >> one of the most virulent cancers is skin cancer and very often, that's where you'll have it start is in the scalp. >> melanoma, one of the most common areas is head, neck, trunk and extremities. so it can occur internally, but the ones that are visible on the outside of the skin are easily detectible and there's a better cure rate if we can detect them and remove them from the skin. >>
